MC Escher Paintings & Artwork
All of the MC Escher Paintings and tessellation artwork can be described as intriguing, surrealistic and precise but in reality his graphics work consisted of woodcuts, engravings lithographs, and mezzotints. He was an artist, photographer, architect, and visionary with extraordinary math skills learned long after he graduated school.
Art Gallery of MC Escher PaintingsDreamlike Quality of His Art
Some major themes of his artwork include Regular Division of a Plane, Dreams, Repeating patterns, four dimensions, flat to spheres, tessellations, and impossible buildings. This man (Maurits Cornelis Escher) had extraordinary talent that was developed from an early age. His use of perspective gave sometimes ordinary subject matter a special dreamlike quality that draws the eye into the scene.
He Loved Italy & Spain
Many of the landscapes in MC Escher paintings were from his earlier work in Italy and Spain. He worked a lot with woodcuts which produced black and white prints. Even his landscape art in black and white uses his unique perspective to show a point of view not common but always very dramatic artwork.
My favorite single piece of MC Escher artwork is the lithograph called Drawing Hands 1948 where a detailed right hand sketches the cuff of a shirt. The cuff leads to a detailed left hand sketching the cuff of the right hand. Both the left and right hands give the impression of real hands emerging out of the piece of paper.
Impossible Art
Another favorite is his lithograph Waterfall which shows square "beams" each presented logically and believable at right angles to each other. When your eye follows the parts it is impossible to find a mistake. Yet when viewed as a whole from a distance it appears to be totally impossible and unbelievable. That is the beauty of MC Escher's art.
