Lawyer Turned Artist
Matisse was a lawyer and probably would not have become a painter if he never got appendicitis. While recovering from surgery he started drawing. He then set out to become a painter by moving to Paris and began to study at Academie Julian. His teacher there was William-Adolphe Bouguereau before he was accepted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts.

Started the Fauvists
Mattise was born in 1869 and is most well known as a member of fauvists, which was an artistic movement, opposed to naturalism and wanted to celebrate the beauty and power of color. The fauvism artwork was much different from very traditional Beaux Arts training where students were taught to copy the art of old masters.

Art in Paris
As a fauve in Paris he wanted to break from the older traditions. The group caused quite a stir in 1905 at the Salon d’Automne when a very traditional critic reviewed their work called them wild, savage beasts, fauves. At that time exhibiting this sort of art work made the artistic headlines. The use of the bright colors that we enjoy in Matise caused an uproar that helped make him famous and gain acceptance from wider audiences. The painting Le Bonheur de vivre (1906) was typical fauvism from that period showing female nudes dancing and playing music across a simplified landscape.

Friend of the Impressionists
A famous Matisse quotation about his art was, “Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the various elements at a painter’s disposal for the expression of his feeling.” This quote may sound like an expressionist painter but Matisse felt they would dwell too much on the negatives in life. Art should induce pleasure and be “something like a good armchair in which to rest from physical fatigue.” He met many of the Impressionists including Cezanne, discussed fine art with them and was also influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and Picasso.

Not afraid to experiment with other mediums he designed costumes and settings for Igor Stravinsky’s opera Le Chant de Rossignol.

Villa in Nice
The later years of his life were spent in the south of France and he acquired a beautiful home on a hill in Nice with commanding view of the Mediterranean Sea. Today that home is a beautiful museum and serves as a Henri Matisse art gallery.

Using Scissors for Art
While on a trip to Tahiti he did visit the United States in 1930 where his art was well received. His later work kept to his basic principle of bright color and happiness but he changed from painting to book illustration using etchings. The use of paper cutouts was described as “drawing with scissors” was his way to further simplify shape and compositions. He died in 1954 at the age of 84 and was a innovative artist until the end. He produced windows and murals for a church in Vence, France. Also, famous works from the Henri Matisse gallery art include Blue Nudes, Jazz and The Dance. Henri Matisse prints and posters remain very popular to this day.
