Pop Art - The Andy Warhol Artwork

The Andy Warhol Artwork most famous was Pop Art. He created lots of different types of art including movies and a magazine but the Pop Art phenomenon was the break that led him from a highly successful commercial artist in the 1950s to a serious artist of the 1960s to the present day.

Famous Andy Warhol Artwork
He was able to mix fame and art too. His Marlyn Monroe and Elvis Presley portraits were enormously successful. By 1964 he was an internationally famous artist. One museum official said of him, "Andy was pop and pop was Andy."

The term "pop art" was coined in England by art critic Lawrence Alloway. Originally it meant popular objects found in everyday life and products in the mass media.

The term developed further and again in England an artist named Richard Hamilton listed the following:

Characteristics of Pop Art

  • Glamorous
  • Witty
  • Sexy
  • Low cost
  • Aimed at youth
  • Transient (a short term solution)
  • Expendable (easily forgotten)
  • Gimmicky
  • Popular, designed for a mass audience
  • Big Business

The Pop Art Style
Warhol dearly wanted to become a famous artist. This was the break into the serious artist movement Andy needed. As a commercial artist in the United States, Andy Warhol was already creating work in the Pop style. He also began using a silk screen process so that he could repeat the creation over and over quickly and easily. The colors he used were bright and often overpowering.
