What Does ASCII Stand For? ASCII is a programming code that stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is pronounced "asky" and as anyone can tell you the ASCII arts are a nice way to send lighthearted messages via email, text message or instant message on your cell phone instead of attaching a graphics file.
The one line ASCII art, or ASCII text art, are usually emoticons (emotocons)these are simple ASCII art small, but there is so much more.
This type of artwork is considered a mass medium, where people from many walks of life use it in a showing of emerging cultural diversity. I guess I could safely say it is truly an art for the masses because we all use it so frequently in our daily lives no matter our location in the world or culture. There is an rather scholarly book on this subject called Cyberpl@y: Communicating Online by Brenda Danet available through Amazon which I found very detailed and well researched.
ASCII Art Gallery The first ASCII Art Gallery of images were produced from typewriters as early as 1939 and computers in the 1960s. Usually they were just black characters on a white paper background or green characters on the screen with a black background. Danet says, “They were sometimes printed on large fanfold paper and hung on office walls, or they were exchanged by email. Occasionally, images were created in reverse--in this case the image consists of white space, contrasting with a black, symbol-filled background. Almost without exception, images were representational "drawings" that represented some object from the real world--whether a birthday cake, an airplane, or a teddy bear.”
When I first viewed the Internet in the mid 1990s the computer screen was a CGA monitor and graphics of any kind were pretty crude by today’s high quality screens used by gamers and artists. Even so, those computers let non-technical users create images including simple emoticons by while using their imagination. These creative types probably did not use the images to communicate at first. Later color was added and then ASCII art gallery was used on the Internet to communicate in email and other messaging to do the communicating. It has come a long way. I find it rather interesting that 1 line ASCII art is so pervasive that even while using Microsoft Word to type, it automatically converts my happy face characters into a graphic .
